Installation of air conditioning system to a building has become one of the latest trend in the current world. Therefore those air conditioning system found in construction industry very often. As a quantity surveyor he or she should possess adequate knowledge about the various types of air conditioning systems as well as he or she should be able to discuss with engineer and go to alternative air conditioning systems. The responsibility of the quantity surveyor is considering about the cost. Therefore the selection should be cost effective.
Through out our course work, we found various types of air conditioning systems. There were some differences among them. They have different features and according to them, their costs also vary. Also when change the shape, size and location; we have changed the air conditioning system to get the maximum value.
The selected building is a proposed commercial building in Maharagama and it was the first floor of the __storey building.
At the beginning of our course work, the heat load of the building was calculated. Partitions were used to cover the cubicles completely. Therefore we had to calculate heat load of each cubicles and design air conditioning systems for each separately. Several types of air conditioning systems are available in the market. They are wall type, packaged type, central type and split type. In our selected building we used split type air conditioning system.
According to the size and purpose of the parts of the building, we assumed reasonable number of people, machineries like computers per each part. Also amount of lighting were selected for parts of the building according to the availability of natural lighting and amount of need of lighting.
Then we found the amount of heat load and we had to select appropriate air conditioning system. But in industry uses heat load in BTU. But the calculations were done in Watt. Therefore we had to use equation to transfer those values to BTU.
This course work helped to improve our knowledge about air conditioning system, their installation and that knowledge helped to identify the components of the air conditioning system. By referring to this knowledge , now we are in a successful design and implement an air conditioning system to any sort of building
